Human Rights Watch has called for an end to “virginity tests” for Indonesian women as a prerequisite for joining the police or military as well as for fiancees of military officers. The World Health Organization called the tests a “widely discredited practice” and “a form of gender-based violence”.
“These procedures have been recognized internationally as a violation of human rights, particularly the prohibition against cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment under article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and article 16 of the Convention against Torture, both of which Indonesia has ratified.”
In Egypt, women detained during the Tahrir Square demonstrations an>d subjected to “virginity tests” have been vindicated in the Egyptian courts.
And Wikipedia? <sigh>. At least it’s not a red link.
