Last month, immigration officials waited outside a hypothermia shelter for the homeless at a church in Fairfax County, Virginia, and picked up anyone looking Hispanic.
Now, a video shows three burly, intimidating dudes from ICE – Immigration and Customs Enforcement – loitering inside a Denver courthouse. They say for the camera they came to make arrests, but they admit they do not have a warrant. So now no one will press charges. Since January, four women have decided not to testify in domestic violence cases because they fear being deported. So now we’re back to 1980. The immigrant community will not cooperate with the police, the court has to dismiss the charges, and the violent offenders go free. And you have to wonder if these cops aren’t getting tipped off by the women’s husbands.
