11 thoughts on “Tate museum circular links on French wiki

  1. Ah but I don’t agree with this: https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rodolphe_d%27Erlanger&type=revision&diff=152392764&oldid=150263574

Archiving via Wikiwix, a product of the commercial Israeli company Wix? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wix.com

This is a for-profit business that makes some of its profit from serving ads. How can Wikipedia, which is an open-source movement, throw its volunteer support to promoting the business of a commercial enterprise it has no control over, and the businesses supported by the ads even less so.

    [….ooops, who is Wikiwix?….]

Now i do think Wikipedia sometimes goes overboard with the open source thing, especially when it comes to Commons and video. But in this case a perfectly adequate open source option is available for the artist Rodolphe d’Erlanger, You can see how many times it has been archived at Internet Archive. https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/rodolphe-derlanger-1062

It’s hard to imagine a cleaner outfit than Internet Archive. It will also probably last longer. You don’t know who will buy WikiWix or what the heirs to the company might do down the road. The Internet Archive has a much better chance of surviving in the long run, probably better than Wikipedia

  2. Wut? Quit wit’ da FakeNews. ^^ Wikiwix is a French company, hosted by a French governmental entity.

Weirdest thing that’s happened so far in this little survey? I saw on the Stokes disambiguation page that there were two painter’s named Adrian Stokes. To disambiguate them I followed an en.wp deadlink to the Oxford National Biography DB, where I found the accurate link to a tiny abstract, and thought… well why not… and added it to fr.wp at §. What was my surprise when I clicked on the link to check that it worked and discovered I suddenly had — voilà! — access to the whole article. 🙂

Thanks for posting this. I have very little artistic culture. I didn’t even know how the Guerrilla Girls were.

  3. Wait, “access to the whole article”? I’m not getting that.

“Add a ‘lire en ligne’ attribute to a citation” by the way means “read online”.

When I click the link it only takes me to the abstract, not the whole article: http://www.oxforddnb.com/abstract/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-67615?rskey=NTD8AV&result=4

    Stokes, (Charles) Adrian Scottlocked
    (1854–1935)

    Magdalen Evans

    https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/67615

    Extract

Stokes, (Charles) Adrian Scott (1854–1935), artist, was born on 23 December 1854 at 77 Hoghton Street, Southport, the third of the five sons (four surviving) of Scott Nasmyth Stokes (1821–1891), the first Roman Catholic inspector of schools, and his wife, Emma Louisa (1820–1896)…

You do not currently have access to this article

    1. Yes, it turns out this was some sort of freak occurrence. I did have full access to the article, perhaps because I clicked on it so persistently while I was poking around, who knows. Sorry for my own fake news. I may finish off the list; I’m surely half way by now. I need to go back through and remember them all, there were lots of things I thought were odd. Here for example, why should the Tate have prize wiki-billing for a French artist? ^^

  4. I’ve mentioned this in emails and don’t have time to track down the details, but I have read somewhere that the Tate is now asking for public feedback on its artist bios. Anyone interested in this issue may want to investigate this further before they spend a lot of time on it, and end up back-tracking on all their work 6 months from now. I would start with Dr Bendor Grosvenor (@arthistorynews) and Tim Schneider https://twitter.com/The_GrayMarket/status/1041725603802755074 and work backwards to the blogs.

It looked for a while like Wikipediocracy might decide to follow this topic but is seems they are more interested in infighting, and in infighting about infighting, than in actual shining of lights into any crevices. Maybe they don’t have the resources. Or maybe they just don’t want to piss off the Tate.

If I may weigh in on one of Wikpediocrazy’s most momentous issues for a moment, Crowsnest tracking some mud into the kitchen with his TLDR grudgefest against Ming. FWIW, my Evil Twin absolutely adores Ming the Merciless. There are few users with comic-book level personalities and even fewer successful ones, the Bishonen brand having become somewhat tarnished by its meanness. Ming balances camp with serious commentary and it is worth parsing Ming’s utterances as many times as necessary to savor Ming’s subtleties.

  5. The link I give in the comment above yours suggests that the tate.org.uk/art/artists/lastname-firstname-tate# links are hardwired into Wikipedia (at least the French version). Insofar as these links aren’t added to support any specific point (like, say, that Fahrelnissa Zeid did a portrait of Trump), this isn’t overly problematic (except that there is a lot more to be found just by a name search).

I’ve stayed out of the Ming wars, which have seemed pretty counterproductive. It’s good to know that your evil twin appreciates Ming’s Minginess. But for all I know Ming is your evil twin. ^^

Actually, I think the big news at Wikipediocrazy at the moment is the return of Cirt (to WP)… though this is out of Google’s reach.
