Free book: Sarah Jeong

Obviously taken out of context and the work of red-pillers, or something like that…(Note: see Snopes)

Sarah Jeong‘s 2015 book, the Internet of Garbage has been republished online for free.

And so the rehabilitation of her reputation begins.  The book links will be more recent than the white-bashing links, and will slowly take up the first page of a google search.

And why not.  The internet is busy trying to rehabilitate all the #metoo dudes, poor fellas, kept from making buckets of money just because they sexually assaulted multiple women and destroyed their lives and their careers.  The price of Jeong’s rehabilitation is that no one ever again gets to bash White People just for being white, and expect to have a career afterwards.  The line has been drawn, and the payoff is Jeong’s presence at the NYT.  She didn’t kill anyone, she didn’t rape anyone, she didn’t even grab anyone by the pussy, as they like to say in our American White House, much less any other unprintable body part.  Why not.  Sure, I won’t be able to eat in Asian restaurants any more, but we can always hope for a taco truck on every corner, or failing that, move to Canada.

So here is the book, first chapter at her old employer, The Verge, the rest is download PDF or Epub or mobi or Amazon Kindle for 99¢ (the minimum price).

My review of chapter 3, printed in the Verge:  this is basically Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act as explained by Ann Landers complete with snappy comebacks, and just a bit dated. It’s also free, just like The Prisoner was re-released free just before the …what was it … Patrick McGoohan…something something….. No doubt there is a sequel in the works which will give her some added SEO juice.

Ireland’s shameful record on abortion rights

The struggle for abortion rights in Ireland is not over.

The decisive vote for repeal in the Republic’s referendum on the Eighth Amendment to its Constitution sent a seismic jolt through Northern Ireland, where abortion remains illegal in almost all cases. It has intensified public conversation about the issue, inspiring pro-choice activists to renew their demands for a change in the law.

I’m just going to take a photograph of Savita Halappanava and put it right here.

Savita died of septic miscarriage in an Irish hospital, because The Patriarchy™ decided it knew what was best for her and refused to let her have the abortion that could have saved her life.

You hear that Black Lives Matter, that Blue Lives Matter, and that All Lives Matter, but in Ireland, the life of someone like Savita does not matter, only the ability of a male-dominated system to force its own authoritarian will on someone it does not even know..

Her husband Praveen moved to the U.S. after getting hate mail.  Can you even imagine?

The Oscars: “inclusion rider”

The run up to the Oscars was heralded by three billboard installations by conservative street artist Sabo, a nod to the film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missourii”.  Does this mean conservatives are making a play for women voters after all?

The billboard predicting “and the Oscar for the biggest pedophile goes to”, didn’t quite come true. There were Oscars for Gary Oldman, accused of beating and choking his wife, and Kobe Bryant, who settled out of court on sexual assault. Ryan Seacrest was there, but widely snubbed, in the aftermath of some rumors of crotch grabbing, but Kathy Griffin offered his accuser a job. Griffin, who was photographed with a fake head of Donald Trump, has been deemed too transgressive to get work in the industry.

The most newsworthy event of the evening was Frances McDormand’s speech.  She asked all the women who had been nominated to stand up, saying that they still had unfunded projects that deserved to be made, and at the end of the speech, introduced the concept of he “inclusion rider”.

The concept of the “inclusion rider” was introduced by Stacy Smith of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who studied diversity in films and discovered that surprise, surprise, surprise, casting was not representative of the population.

“The typical feature film has about 40 to 45 speaking characters in it” she explained. “I would argue that only 8 to 10 of those characters are actually relevant to the story. The remaining 30 or so roles, there’s no reason why those minor roles can’t match or reflect the demography of where the story is taking place. An equity rider by an A-lister in their contract can stipulate that those roles reflect the world in which we actually live.”

This would not be a bad thing for Wikipedia to adopt.

If Frances McDormand looks familiar, she was the pregnant sheriff in “Fargo”.  Speaking of wood-chipper murders, did you know the movie was inspired by a real murder, that of Helle Crafts, whose Wikipedia article is perversely at “Murder of Helle Crafts“.

Men who are only notable for having killed someone get their own names and identities, like Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, or Ted Bundy, are all given the dignity of their own names by Wikipedia titles, while the unfortunate Helle Crafts, who had filed for divorce and did not wish to be linked to her husband in real life, is irrevocably possessed by him in death, sickeningly labeled by Wikipedia with the violence he did to her.  Surely her life was much more than that.

Pervert crisis in Iceland

The Prime Minister of Iceland, Bjarni Benediktsson, has just resigned over a pedo coverup crisis.  It seems that in Iceland, people can get rehabilitated from crimes, even sex crimes against children, if they have enough clout. Well, what is new in this world.

In this case it was Bjarni’s father, who signed the letter for a “friend”.

Under Iceland’s judicial system, a person who has served a sentence for a serious crime can apply to authorities to “restore their honor” and seek employment again, meaning their criminal record is erased. For that, a letter of recommendation by a close friend or an associate is needed.

Benediktsson’s father had written a letter urging a pardon for Hjalti Sigurjon Hauksson, who was convicted in 2004 of raping his stepdaughter almost every day for 12 years.

The LA Times doesn’t mention her age,  but BBC news does not shrink from the task:

…convicted in 2004 of raping his stepdaughter almost every day for 12 years from when she was five.

Bjarni twitter1Bjarni’s Twitter account identifies him as a “HeForShe Champion”.  Some champion.

And his Wikipedia article provides the final ironic bit of trivia. Bjarni’s user name on Ashley Madison, a website for extramarital affairs, was “IceHot1”.  No word on his wife’s user name.

Welcome to 1984: Trump signs Global Gag Rule

A group of white men enact a policy that kills women.

This is what patriarchy looks like. A group of white men look on as Trump signs the #GlobalGagRule – it is no exaggeration that women are going to die from this.

The rule reinstates a 1984 law that cuts funding to any organization that even mentions abortion. It will prevent women in developing countries from accessing safe reproductive health care.

“A 20-country study from 2011 found abortion rates actually *increased* 40% the last time #GlobalGagRule was in place.”

“As long as you live you’ll never see a photograph of 7 women signing legislation about what men can do with their reproductive organs”

The two major family planning partners of USAID, Marie Stopes International (MSI) and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), will refuse to sign.

These organizations integrate HIV prevention into maternal and reproductive health.

“The Lesotho Planned Parenthood Association, for example, had received 426,000 condoms from USAID over two years during the Clinton administration. Once the gag rule went back into effect, USAID had to end condom shipments to Lesotho entirely because the association was the only available conduit for condoms in that country. At that time, one in four women in Lesotho was infected with HIV.”

Anyone with friends who come from Africa knows how devastating it is when they go back for a visit and find out how many of their girlhood friends have died from AIDS.
