GRL PWR and tats

GRL-PWR (The Girl-Power Foundation) is a 501(c) non-profit organization for empowering young girls.  It was started by Bria Toussaint and Royal Phillips, two students at Freedom High School in South Riding, Loudoun County, Virginia. The two students had faced many challenges, including poverty, moving, divorce, and even domestic violence and murder,  but realized they also had strong female role models, that prevented them from turning to the self-destructive patterns that plagued other young women like eating disorders or underage pregnancy.(4)  They developed a curriculum to help girls build self-esteem that would enable them to become role models for other girls, and launched the program as an after-school program at Liberty Elementary School in 2010. (1)

After winning the 2012 Step Up Loudoun competition, the program started getting more notice. (2)  It was expanded as a spring break camp and summer camp. (3) When Toussaint and Phillips became students at Spelman College, America’s oldest and most prestigious historically black college for women in Atlanta, Georgia, they continued the program and later partnered with the YouthQuest Foundation.(5)

Participants in the program sign a contract with 31 promises, including “Think Positive”, “Be Nice to Others”, “Achieve my Goals”, “Not Be Afraid to Stand Up for Myself”, “Be Nice to Myself”, “Respect My Elders”, and “Be Resilient.” (6)

Tattoos

By 2017 the abbreviation GRL PWR was already being thought of as a “battle cry”.  It had become a favorite on t-shirts and entered the world of tattoos. (7)(8)

“I get a lot of women who come to get a tattoo and they don’t want flowers or any girly shit, they want a permanent symbol of their girl power.”

By the summer of 2017, the tiny, minimalist GRL PWR tattoos had gone viral on Instagram, with more than 2000 people posting photos of their tattoos. (9)

The GRL PWR tattoo was recently seen on the poster for the Unite for Justice rally. (See Stop Kavanaugh?) but if you look closely at the photo, you can see it is not an actual ink tattoo — there is a shine around the edges.

There are several ways to get this temporary tattoo if you do not want to go the permanent ink-and-needle route. The least labor-intensive is to just order it. The search term “grl pwr temporary tattoo” should bring up the current crop of Etsy and other online tat purveyors.

A faster way, if you don’t want to wait for an order to arrive, is to either draw it on yourself or use a printer with special tattoo paper.

If you opt to draw on yourself, again google the instructions. You can use a permanent sharpie, or a stencil, but the preferred method is with eye liner (the pencil kind, not the liquid kind) because it is meant to be used on skin.  The tat is then sealed with either hair spray or a spray-on band aid product to make it last longer.  If you want a more professional look, you can buy temporary tattoo paper to use in your printer. You can order it online but it is probably available locally at Walmart (ugh) or a sewing supply shop like Joann Fabrics.  The tattoo is embedded in the adhesive, so you have to use a reverse image. The search term is “printable tattoo paper”.
