Judicial confirmation hearings

Oh dear.  Isn’t this called “dead-naming”?

A prisoner was convicted of sexual offenses under one name and transferred to a women’s prison under another name, and Republican senators are entering both names into the Congressional Record. Are they supposed to do that?

This might be one to follow.

The confirmation hearing is for Judge Sarah Netburn (red link), nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. But it looks like she already holds that position.  What am I missing? https://ballotpedia.org/Sarah_Netburn https://ballsandstrikes.org/nominees/sarah-netburn/

The prisoner’s new name is July Justine Shelby, but it is not clear whether this is a legal name, or whether it matters in this case. What name do they use for the sex offender registry?

The prisoner was transferred to FMC Carswell, a female federal correctional facility in Texas, based on Estelle v Gamble, which deals with medical care for incarcerated people.

“The landmark Supreme Court case Estelle v. Gamble established that failure to provide adequate medical care to incarcerated people as a result of deliberate indifference to serious medical needs violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. But this standard is a very high bar to meet.” [source]
