Laurel Burch cats

“In our fast-paced, changing world, we need symbols that are a reminder
of the ongoing world of the spirit”. -Laurel Burch

It took me forever to find this artist, starting with a description of “vintage hand carved wood folk art cat sculpture”.

But once you see these cat faces, you just have to know what it is.

As it turns out, Laurel Burch was an American designer who started in San Francisco in the 1960s, which is probably why her art has that psychedelic vibe. She did designs for Bella Casa by the Toronto-based Ganz from at least 1990 to 1998.

The cat designs ended up on plates, teapots and bookends, but were most often little four-inch standalone folk art statues.  A lot of the wooden ones are unmarked, or are marked Thailand.  The identification stickers on the wooden ones don’t look very durable, compared to the ceramics.
